Gutenberg 23.9 is out, with two quality-of-life fixes for anyone who builds pages in the block editor.
Insert a block without hunting for the inserter
Finding the block inserter, the button you click to add a new block, was hit or miss depending on what you had selected. Now you can insert directly from the block toolbar. Add another image to a gallery or drop a new block into a group without changing your selection or scrolling to track down the inserter button.
See which blocks have custom styles at a glance
Global Styles now marks blocks that have custom style overrides with a dot indicator, so you don’t have to click into each block to check. There’s also a filter that shows only the blocks with customizations, useful if you’re auditing a page to see everywhere someone has overridden the theme’s default styling.
Other changes
The release also adds independent horizontal and vertical spacing controls for flex and grid layouts inside the group block, extends Global Styles to cover citations, form inputs, and select elements, and lets you build custom duotone color palettes instead of picking only from theme-provided options. In total, Gutenberg 23.9 ships more than 80 enhancements, bug fixes, and performance improvements.
