WordPress 7.2 will add a built-in way to send visitors to a random post. Type yoursite.com/random/ and WordPress redirects you to a randomly chosen published post.
According to the WordPress core team, the feature is on by default. You do not have to install anything.
What the URLs do
The /random/ address also works with your existing archives:
/random/category/news/goes to a random post in the “news” category./random/tag/guides/does the same for a tag./random/author/jane/goes to a random post by that author.
You can change the word “random” in Settings, then Permalinks. The default word is translatable.
Which content is included
Posts are eligible. Pages and media attachments are not. Custom post types, such as events or products, are eligible if they have a public archive. Developers can opt a type out with a new randomable setting.
Why site owners should care
Anyone can now land on any published post, including old ones. If you have outdated advice or expired offers still online, they could surface more often. It is a good reason to tidy up old content.
If you do not want the feature, the core team says a filter can switch it off for the whole site. Ask your developer to add it. The feature arrives with WordPress 7.2, which is currently in beta.
