The WordPress Core AI team has released the MCP Adapter as a plugin on WordPress.org. It is the official way for a WordPress site to talk to AI assistants. Most site owners do not need to act, but plugins you use may soon depend on it.

What the MCP Adapter does

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude or ChatGPT connect to apps and use their features. The MCP Adapter makes your WordPress site speak that language.

It works by bridging the Abilities API, which arrived in WordPress 6.9. Abilities are permission-checked actions that plugins and core can register. We covered the proposal to expose more core data through abilities in July. The adapter turns any publicly exposed ability into a tool an AI assistant can find and run.

What ships in the plugin

According to the Core AI team’s announcement, the plugin includes a default MCP server at /wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server. That server comes with three basic tools. Developers can also build their own servers, tools, and prompts on top of it.

The plugin is server infrastructure only. It has no chat window and no client of its own. You still need an AI assistant that can connect to it.

Why it matters to site owners

Until now, AI connection plugins each built their own bridge. Vibe AI, which lets an assistant edit your site by chat, is one example. A shared adapter gives them a common foundation. Other plugins can also list it as a dependency, so WordPress can install it for you when needed.

The team says the plugin is still experimental, with a stable 1.0 as the goal. Version 0.7.0 adds support for the newest MCP spec, and older clients still connect.

What to do now

If you do not use AI tools with your site, do nothing. If you run a custom integration built on the old GitHub or Composer package, read the 0.7.0 migration guide in the plugin’s GitHub docs. Test the update on a staging site first.

Only abilities that are publicly exposed are reachable through the default server, and each ability carries its own authorization rules. Before you connect an assistant, check which abilities your plugins expose. Yesterday’s AI plugin 1.4.0 release shows how fast this area is moving.
