If you’ve ever set a background image on a Group block and then tried to add a dark gradient over it to make your text readable, you’ve probably run into a wall. Until now, you could have a background image or a gradient on these blocks, but not both at once.
WordPress 7.1 fixes that.
What’s changing
The block editor’s Background panel gets a new gradient control that works alongside a background image instead of replacing it. Set an image, then layer a gradient on top, both render together.
This lands by default on five core blocks: Group, Accordion, Pullquote, Post Content, and Quote. If you use any of these blocks with a background image, you’ll see the new gradient option appear in the Background panel once you’re on WordPress 7.1.
Under the hood, the old gradient option and the new one are stored separately, so this is a genuinely new capability rather than a fix to the existing one. The practical use case: a photo background with a dark gradient fading over it so your headline or quote text stays legible.
What you need to do
Nothing to install. This is part of the WordPress 7.1 release, which is still in beta and set to ship as final on August 19, 2026, the same update we’ve been tracking this month. Once you update, open the Background panel on a Group, Quote, Pullquote, Accordion, or Post Content block with an image set, and the gradient control will be there.
